Pastelillos, Empanadillas, and Empanadas are types of Latin American snacks that consist of a small piece of dough filled with a variety of different fillings. I know that it is not easy to say Pastelillos (pahs-teh-lee-yohs), Empanadillas (em-pa-na-di-yas); they are also know as a Puerto Rican Empanadas.

An Empanadilla is a smaller turnover made of thin dough that is crimped at the edges and fried. Empanadas, on the other hand, are thicker and have rolled edges. Puerto Ricans have been divided over what to call their the pastelillos, empanadillas, empanadas, and so on for centuries. Empanadilla is the term used to describe everything south of the island, whereas pastelillo is the term used to describe everything in the center and north of the island. The one thing that is certain, is that these tasty treats are very popular all over the island. My family comes from many areas in Puerto Rico; the southeast coast in Humacao, northcentral in Vega Baja, and in the northern coastal area in San Juan - so these tasty treats are known in my family by many names.

At Encanto Kitchen our dough is made from scratch and seasoned to perfection and are filled in a variety of ways. But our preferences are Cheese, Beef, Chicken, Pork, Stewed Kidney Beans, Garbanzo and baby bella mushrooms, or Lentils, Sweet Potato, and baby bella mushrooms.
